Jim’s Vision for change in Alabama

I believe the good people of District 47 value authenticity and integrity and will elect the candidate who best represents their values, whether they are a Democrat, Republican, or Independent.

I think that all legislators, whether Democrat or Republican, should be working together to find solutions that are ethical and will strengthen the Middle Class. I judge solutions as to whether or not they are ethical and will strengthen the Middle Class. This country was built by the strength of the Middle Class.  Alabama needs strong leaders who will have the courage to put the well being of all Alabamians ahead of their political party.

I have a proven track record of accomplishments and of working with others to solve problems. We all have varying opinions when it comes to how to best accomplish things that are important to us. I believe you treat others with respect and be prepared to compromise on some issues to get what is important to you, as long as you don't compromise your integrity. In other words be prepared to reach across the aisle to work with everyone.

Expand Medicaid

Alabama’s refusal to expand Medicaid eligibility to 235,000 uninsured, low-income residents is hindering the state’s economic development efforts. No matter where you stand on this issue, not taking advantage of the Medicaid expansion option was and remains an irresponsible decision for our state. Without adequate funding, about 15 rural hospitals across the state have already shuttered their doors and a dozen more could potentially shut down. Emergency room care is the most expensive form of care, and about 75 percent of emergency room patients in Alabama are uninsured and they tend to enter the system at a more advanced and costly stage of illness. Medicaid expansion would help to lower these costs by covering more preventive care. Not only do our citizens in the coverage gap need the insurance, but our economy needs the potential 30,000 jobs and millions in related revenue that would result. We need to be innovative in determining ways to cover our 10% matching investment, but as long as the expansion option is available, we should take it.

Strengthen Education

Investing in education in Alabama and thereby increasing the number of well-educated workers will improve the strength of Alabama's economy and our ability to attract high-wage employers. We need an educated work force to attract new industry. I am a strong supporter of public school education (Pre-K to at least 2 years of post-secondary studies) and the obligations that come with it. I have served as PTA President among many other roles because I believe a community has an obligation to provide a high quality education for its residents. According to the AL School Readiness Alliance, for every $1 we invest in high-quality pre-k, we receive $7 in cost savings from a host of public assistance expenditures – healthcare, criminal justice and other services. Whatever business you’re in, that’s a sound dividend.

Fair Voting Practices

Simply put, we should make it easier to vote in Alabama, not more difficult. We should provide more places to register to vote with more convenient hours of operation, not fewer places with fewer hours. We should allow more forms of identification, like we did in the past, rather than a picture ID provided by the government, or at least make it free. We must stop gerrymandering our voting districts through the manipulation of the boundaries that favors one political party over the other. The Legislative Districts were redrawn in the 2020 legislative session. I want to represent you in this process to ensure the fairness of the process.

Ethical Leadership

We elect public officials to serve the people of our great state of Alabama. Alabama has had more that its share of scandals. We deserve better. We deserve public officials that will do their homework before voting on legislation, then vote on legislation that best benefits their constituency, not their political party. We cannot choose grandstanding over governing. I have served my community in the private sector for many years. When I am elected to the Alabama House of Representatives I will represent you with compassion and integrity. I expect you to hold me accountable. You should expect leadership like this and should say so at the voting booth.

Environmental Stewardship

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that approximately 10 percent of the freshwater resources in the entire continental United States originate in or flow through Alabama. In addition to water use by humans, Alabama's waterways are an integral part of a productive freshwater ecosystem that supports some of the most biologically rich and diverse plant and animal life in North America.  Freshwater is one of Alabama's greatest assets and must be protected.

I suspect you, a friend, or a neighbor enjoys the recreation benefits of Alabama's waterways. You certainly expect clean drinking water when you turn on the faucet. I am an avid supporter of common sense legislation to protect the quality and quantity of water in our state’s 132,000-mile system of rivers and streams.
